Tell me how it works
At Creel Fish Club we’re big on freshness as all our fish has been landed within 48 hours. It comes straight from the fishing boats into our cold store, is boxed on site then ready for pick-up. The great thing about Creel Fish Club is you never really know what fish is going to be in your box. We buy the fisherman’s catch whatever it might include. Whilst the majority of flat fish are gutted on the boat the round fish and shellfish are normally whole. We’ll be running filleting courses for members keen to learn to fillet their own fish or you can have your fish filleted for a fee.
At Creel Fish Club we don’t just cherry pick the celebrity fish and well-known species from the fisherman’s catch. Whilst fishermen set out on a daily basis with intent to catch certain species, they nearly always catch a percentage of additional, lesser-known species which are just as fresh, seasonal and tasty. By supporting the fishermen with a whole catch ethos not only are we helping them remain sustainable but it means you’ll be getting a variety of seafood throughout the season. This does mean that sometimes you’ll get a great deal on a premium fish in your box but other times your fish might not be of such celebrity status, but will be just as tasty. Don’t worry, we want all our members to feel confident in cooking and eating the full range of super-fresh species caught off the Northumberland coast and we’ll supply plenty of recipes, tips and advice on how to prepare and cook your fish.
Tell me about the fish
The majority of fish and shellfish sold through Creel Fish Club are seasonal so we can’t predict what you’ll get in your box. But that’s what is great about Creel Fish Club – it’s all about getting back in touch with the seasons through locally caught fish.
Unfortunately fish don’t come in rounded metric units. The fish are measured whole in kgs and we have 3 different share sizes on offer: 1/2kg, 1kg and 2kg. If you choose to have your fish filleted, this will reduce the weight of fish that ends up in your box. Generally speaking, a 2kg whole fish will yield 1kg of edible fish once the head, fins, skin, bones etc are discarded. As a guide we suggest 250gms of filleted fish equals 1 portion for person. A filleted portion of fish will have skin on one side. Please note, if we are a little underweight on your order one week we’ll make sure it’s a little over weight next time to make up for it!
Whilst you won’t be able to pre-order exact species of fish (as we mentioned, what’s in your box is dictated by the seasons) shellfish including crab, lobster and prawns are caught all year round off the Northumberland coast. If you have a special occasion coming up or you just fancy a treat, you have the option to order these as extras if you’d like to.
If there are any species of fish or shellfish you don’t like or are allergic too, PLEASE LET US KNOW ASAP! There will be an option in the sign up process for you to do this. We don’t want to send you anything you’re allergic to or don’t like!
So what kind of fish are we talking about?
The great thing about Creel Fish Club is what’s in your box depends on what the fishermen have caught. Some days you’ll be cooking up a cod or a haddock and other days you’ll be a cooking a fish you’ve never even heard of or had the opportunity to try before. Elsewhere on our website we have a species chart and seasonality guide for you to click on and learn about the different types of fish that will appear in your box. We also have a whole host of recipes for you try and lots of tips on how to prepare and cook your fish. Sign up for our newsletter, follow us on social media and keep an eye on our blog for latest recipes, news and videos!
Where do I pick up my fish?
Our pick up points include the Northumberland Seafood Centre in Amble; Taste of Northumbria in Alnwick; The Running Fox in Felton; Moorhouse Farm Shop at Stannington Station; Blagdon Farm Shop at Seaton Burn, Vallum Farm at East Wallhouses and Brocksbushes Farm Shop at Corbridge. We are continuously looking to partner with great foodie businesses to host our ‘pick-up hubs’ around the region, so keep an eye on our website for future new hubs.
If you know you aren’t able to make a collection one week, please let us know so we can re-arrange your order. We’d please ask you to give us a minimum of 4 days’ notice prior to your collection. If you fail to inform us in time, we’ll make sure your fish goes to a good home, but you will be charged for it. At this stage we have already ordered and paid for your fish so we hope you understand.
If you can’t collect your fish, and you inform us in time, you have four different options:
- Have a friend or family member pick your fish up instead. (You don’t even need to tell us beforehand for this option – all they have to do is say your name).
- Arrange to come and pick your fish up at a specified time outside Creel Fish Club hours. As long as you let us know when, we’d be happy to keep your fish fresh in our cold store to pick up at a convenient time.
- Swap weeks. If you collect your fish fortnightly or monthly and you’re going to be on holiday, not a problem. Just let us know the fortnight/month before and we’ll arrange to swap your week.
- Double up on your next order. If you’re away for a week and would like to skip a week and double up on your next order, that’s not a problem. As long as you give us 1 weeks’ notice we can arrange for you to have a double order on your return.
If you simply forget to come and collect your fish on the day and don’t contact us to make alternative arrangements, we’re very sorry but there’s nothing we can do. You will still be charged for your fish.
How do I pay for my membership and what if I want to cancel?
At Creel Fish Club we ask all our members to sign up for a minimum of one month’s subscription and you will pay for your first month of seafood up front. Your account will then be set up on a rolling direct debit and you will be debited each month for the amount you have signed up to. If you’re happy with things, you don’t need to do anything, just continue to enjoy your seafood! If you do need to cancel your subscription, you can do so at any time after the first month. We ask that you give us 7 days’ notice so we can cancel your membership and ensure you are not charged for an additional month.
There’s a storm brewing at sea, will I still get my fish?
The majority of fish we buy comes from fishermen whose boats are less than 10m long and occasionally they can’t get out to sea if the weather is bad and the seas are rough. When we know we are going to be short of fish due to the weather, we’ll contact you as soon as possible and let you know. If you ever go without fish or we can’t supply you with fish on your allotted Creel Fish Club collection day, you can rest assured we’ll make it up to you. We can either add an extra week to your collections or give you a double share on the week of your choosing. We’re happy to make individual arrangements with each of our customers should this happen.
